Under the new PSLE Oral format, this component will now be worth 40 marks, increasing its weighting to 20% of the overall PSLE English grade. As such, the Oral component now has a larger impact on your child's final grade. 

Reading Aloud

The Reading Aloud section assesses your child's ability to read a given text fluently and expressively. 

Under the 2025 changes, this section is now worth 15 marks, with a significant change being the introduction of a preamble before the passage. This preamble sets the context for the reading. 

As such, students will be expected to implement the PACT (Purpose, Audience, Context, and Tone) framework when reading the PSLE oral reading passages aloud.

For example, the preamble may specify that the passage is a speech to convince a class to take part in a recycling drive. Candidates will then have to tailor their tone and expression in their delivery to match this scenario.

Stimulus-Based Conversation (SBC)

The PSLE Oral Stimulus-Based Conversation (SBC) section engages your child in a conversation with examiners based on a visual stimulus. 

Its marks have increased to 25, making it a substantial portion of the PSLE English Oral component. A key change here is that the Reading Aloud and SBC topics are no longer thematically linked, so the image may be entirely unrelated to the passage read. 

Furthermore, the shift from static posters or drawings to real-life photographs means students must now focus intently on interpreting the actions, feelings, and intentions conveyed within the image. This compels students to move beyond simply describing what they see.

Practice is essential for your child to hone their Reading Aloud skills in the PSLE English Oral exam. You can make these practice sessions more effective by implementing the PACT framework.
